Strengthening Nursing Careers: The Revised Career Progression Guidelines

In a significant step toward structuring nursing careers in Kenya, the NMA team organized a workshop to review the Career Progression Guidelines (formerly known as the Scheme of Service 2014) for nurses and midwives in Kenya. This document provides a clear framework outlining the various grades within the nursing profession, as well as the educational and professional requirements for each level. These guidelines ensure that every nurse in Kenya has a clear path for advancement, with set conditions for promotions, pay scales, and other professional standards.

Dr. Judith Awinja, the Director of Nursing Services at the Ministry of Health, Kenya, led the workshop from July 22 to 26, 2024, in Diani, Kwale County, Kenya. Attendees included directors from the Public Service Commission, Mr Otom and Jeremiah Kagwe, as well as representatives from the Human Resources Department of the Ministry of Health. This collaboration highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring a structured, transparent career path for nurses, aligning with the broader goals of improving healthcare standards across the country.
