Over the years, the nursing profession has undergone significant changes, resulting in the development of various education programs such as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Unfortunately, these advancements have not resulted in a public image that recognizes the scientific and professional development of the profession.

Nurses in Kenya still suffer from gender stereotypes, low status, limited advancement opportunities, and being perceived as subordinates, passive, or even invisible, even though nurses and midwives in Kenya are trusted and respected members of the community.

The Nurse and Midwife Alliance convenes stakeholders in the nursing profession in Kenya to begin a discussion on nurses’ image, self-concept, and professional identity in the Kenyan context. The project’s outcomes will help nurses develop strategies to achieve a public perception that reflects their scholarship and professionalism.
